The Africa Youth Growth Foundation (AYGF) recently participated in a high-level stakeholder consultation organized by the African Development Bank in Abuja, focused on the development of the Youth, Skills, and Jobs Action Plan (2027–2033). The consultation brought together key development actors to shape strategies aimed at improving youth employment outcomes across Africa. During the engagement, AYGF made a strong case for a strategic shift in approach—from focusing solely on “training” to prioritizing “job creation.” The organization emphasized that while skills development remains important, it must be directly linked to sustainable income opportunities that can meaningfully improve the livelihoods of young people in Nigeria and beyond. AYGF also highlighted the importance of grounding policy and program design in local realities. In particular, the organization drew attention to systemic barriers such as insecurity and fragmented program delivery, which continue to limit the effectiveness of youth employment initiatives. Addressing these challenges, AYGF noted, is essential to ensuring that interventions are both practical and impactful. The consultation served as an important platform for collaboration, bringing together diverse perspectives to strengthen the design of scalable, field-based interventions. AYGF stressed the need for approaches that move beyond classroom-based training and instead support real-world economic participation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods. Through this engagement, AYGF reaffirmed its commitment to working with the African Development Bank and other partners to ensure that investments in youth development translate into tangible opportunities. The shared goal remains clear: to build systems that not only equip young people with skills but also connect them directly to meaningful and lasting economic pathways. As planning for the 2027–2033 Action Plan continues, AYGF remains dedicated to contributing evidence-based insights and grassroots perspectives that help shape a more inclusive and opportunity-driven future for Africa’s youth.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION 2025
AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation The International Day of Education, observed annually on January 24, celebrates the important role of education in fostering global peace, sustainable development, and prosperity. This year’s theme, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” highlights the dual role of artificial intelligence as a powerful tool for enhancing education while emphasizing the need to maintain human-centered approaches. Lately, a lot of concerns have been raised about the dependency and overrelaince on AI systems and it has been stated that gradually Artificial intelligence (AI), known by some as the industrial revolution (IR) 4.0, is going to change not only the way we do things, how we relate to others, but also what we know about ourselves and this fast becoming a prophecy fulfilled. AI is the simulation of human intelligence with the use of advanced technologies while “preserving human agency” underscores the importance of ensuring that humans maintain control of learning processes and cognitive decisions. Together, the theme depicts the need for us to harness AI to empower learners and educators while safeguarding their cognitive autonomy. Truly, education in the age of AI presents both opportunities and challenges. AI-powered tools can personalize learning experiences, automate administrative tasks, and expand access to education. However, the increasing reliance on automation raises concerns about the potential erosion of critical thinking, creativity, and ethical decision-making. This International Day of Education serves as a reminder that while AI can complement human efforts, it must never replace the irreplaceable qualities of human interaction, empathy, and ingenuity. Preserving human agency ensures that education remains a transformative force rooted in human values and aspirations. To effectively integrate AI while preserving human agency, the following strategies can be adopted: In addition, a range of resources can support the integration of AI in education while preserving human agency: https://www.unesco.org/en/articles/what-you-need-know-about-unescos-new-ai-competency-frameworks-students-and-teachers?hub=32618 10.13140/RG.2.2.25169.24160 10.1016/j.compedu.2023.104967 To commemorate this year’s International Day of Education, we have created a video that highlights the significance of “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.” This visual presentation captures insight on how AI is shaping the future of learning while retaining the essence of human involvement , the limited access to technology and how we must equip our teachers to use these innovations without losing the human touch that makes education so impactful. Click here (Add link to youtube post) to watch the video. The theme “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation” calls on all stakeholders to act thoughtfully and collaboratively. Here’s how you can contribute and also collaborate with us: At AYGF, we are committed to bridging education gaps. Through our BLOOM Project—Bridging Learning Opportunities for Out-of-School Minors—we aim to send 2 million children back to school. It’s a bold goal, but one we are pursuing with passion and purpose. Alongside this, we are empowering teachers with the skills they need to thrive in a world of evolving technology. Also, as we celebrate the International Day of Education, we at AYFG embrace the potential of AI to revolutionize learning while steadfastly preserving the human essence that makes education a force for good while encouraging you to do the same. International Day of the Girl Child 2024: A Vision for the Future
The International Day of the Girl Child observed annually on October 11th, highlights the rights, potential, and unique challenges girls face worldwide. This year’s theme, “Vision for the Future,” underscores the importance of equipping girls with the tools and opportunities to shape a better world. In Zambia, the focus is on elucidating the challenges Girls encounter while honouring their inherent strength, resilience, and capacity to assume leadership roles within their communities and beyond. Zambian girls face numerous challenges that limit their opportunities and rights. Despite ongoing efforts to improve the status of girls, significant barriers remain: Despite these challenges, Zambian girls show remarkable resilience and potential. Across the country, girls are taking on leadership roles in their communities advocating for their rights, and challenging the norms that hold them back. They are standing up against child marriage, advocating for equal access to education, and demanding safe environments where they can thrive. Organisations and initiatives focused on girls’ empowerment in Zambia play a crucial role in this progress. Efforts like providing scholarships for girls, mentorship programs, and awareness campaigns on the importance of keeping girls in school are making a difference. These initiatives help girls to break free from cycles of poverty and dependency, opening doors to a brighter future. As we look to the future, Zambia must create a society where every girl can realise her full potential. This means: Conclusion The International Day of the Girl Child reminds us that Zambian girls are vital to the nation’s future. By investing in their education, health, and safety, we not only pave the way for a brighter future for these girls but also contribute to the overall progress and prosperity of the country. Let us commit to breaking down the barriers that hold girls back and working towards a vision where every Zambian girl has the opportunity to achieve her dreams, contribute to her community, and lead Zambia toward a brighter tomorrow.
