Nutrition and food security

Strategic goal: To build thriving communities where every individual can attain optimal nutritional well-being and lead healthier, more productive lives, while significantly reducing child mortality caused by malnutrition, particularly in underserved rural areas.

GFA-CBT PROJECT

The General Food Assistance – Cash-Based Transfer (GFA-CBT) project is an initiative of the Africa Youth Growth Foundation (AYGF), in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP), aimed at addressing the nutritional needs of vulnerable households affected by conflict and climate-related shocks in Katsina State, Nigeria.

PROBLEM

  1. Nearly 4.4 million children and 585,000 pregnant or lactating women in the northwest and northeast suffer from acute malnutrition and need urgent nutritional support.
  2. In many rural and conflict-affected communities, families lack access to nutritious food, safe water, and proper sanitation, making children more vulnerable to illness and nutrient loss.
  3. Across the country, millions of households struggle to access affordable, nutritious food, especially in rural and conflict-affected regions where droughts, floods, and insurgency have disrupted agriculture and food supply chains.

MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE GENERAL FOOD ASSISTANCE – CASH-BASED TRANSFER (GFA-CBT) PROJECT

  • To meet the increased humanitarian needs occasioned by the persistent banditry and conflict in the northwest of Nigeria. Specifically, the project seeks to distribute a total of 1,963MTs of Ukrainian wheat to 86,389 vulnerable individuals including IDPS in Katsina State of Northwest Nigeria.

GOAL OF THE GENERAL FOOD ASSISTANCE – CASH-BASED TRANSFER (GFA-CBT) PROJECT

  • To contribute to the food security, nutritional well-being, and overall resilience of vulnerable households affected by conflict and climate-related shocks in five targeted wards of Katsina State by providing timely food assistance, livelihood support, and community-based resilience interventions
