Strengthening Healthcare Waste Management in Edo State: A Milestone for the Support to Malaria Elimination Project

On June 19, 2026, the Support to Malaria Elimination Project (SMEP) reached another important milestone with the commissioning of healthcare waste bins to strengthen healthcare waste management across Edo State.

The commissioning ceremony brought together representatives of Africa Youth Growth Foundation (AYGF), the Edo State Ministry of Health, the Director of Public Health, Dr. Ojeifo Stephenson B., who represented the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshomole, the Project Implementation Unit (PIU), and other key stakeholders united by a shared commitment to improving public health outcomes.

Proper healthcare waste management is a critical component of quality healthcare delivery. By providing appropriate waste disposal infrastructure, this initiative contributes to creating safer healthcare facilities, protecting healthcare workers and communities, reducing environmental risks, and supporting effective infection prevention and control measures.

The commissioning of these healthcare waste bins reflects the collaborative efforts of government and development partners to strengthen health systems and ensure that health facilities are equipped with the resources needed to provide safe, efficient, and sustainable services.

As implementation of the Support to Malaria Elimination Project continues, AYGF remains committed to working with partners to improve healthcare delivery, promote environmental health, and advance the collective goal of eliminating malaria in Edo State.

Together, we are building healthier communities through stronger health systems and responsible healthcare waste management.
